Do you remember what your favourite picture book was when you were little? Maybe you still have some of your old books with your name scrawled on the inside front cover. I have one on my bookshelf to this day called Bears in the Night by Stan and Jan Berenstain. When I see the cover I remember my Dad reading me this story about these nervy bears who venture..."out of bed, to the window, out the window, down the tree, over the wall, under the bridge, around the lake, between the rocks, through the woods, up Spook Hill!" (It's always such a relief when they make it back home).
I've found many more favourites over the years, and my family and I have spent many hours reading these delightful books. They are filled with great artwork, creativity, imagination, memorable characters and funny phrases that will lodge permanently in your mind.
If you spend a lazy day with a big stack of picture books at your side, you will find yourself saying wonderful things like:
will show off its yawn
anytime you request it.
Both you and your chair
could fit inside there
though I wouldn't suggest it.
--Sandra Boynton, Snoozers.
You might be drawn to a certain book, and when you are, pick it up and read it. Within its pages you'll find truth, wisdom and good messages to live by, like this:
"It's today," squeaked Piglet.
"My favourite day," said Pooh.
--from The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne
Please note: Picture books are appropriate for all ages and are part of a complete life.
