If you're looking for a movie that beautifully balances grittiness, humour and emotional uplift, City of God is an amazing experience. Two boys grow up in a favela in Brazil: one will be inspired by the city and become an acclaimed photographer, while the other will become entangled in gangs and drugs. This coming-of-age story is also a celebration of Brazil and its people and a lament for the lives lost to poverty, drugs and violence in its poorest neighbourhoods.
