It seemed strange for an Irishman to write an historical novel about the United States, but when you read the terrible suffering and the crazy, wild joys of the heroes, it couldn’t be more Irish. The unique tone of the narrator catches you immediately, and the scenes between Native Americans and the U.S. Army would be almost unbearable if it weren’t for the sparse, magnificent prose. Sip this book like good whiskey and enjoy it while it lasts.
