Reading Buddies

Share Volunteer Impact:

Help a young child improve reading skill and self-esteem, and build mentoring skills of your own. Reading Buddies partner a child who is learning to read with a skilled teen to play games, enjoy books and participate in fun activities together. 


·         Meet with reading buddy weekly for 1 hr

·         Assist and guide child while they practice reading

·         Participate in games and activities

·         Provide encouragement and positive feedback to a young child

·         Contact the session leader in the event that you will miss a session or must discontinue your volunteering


Time Required: Weekly; 1 hour per week
Commitment: Eight weekly sessions plus one training session
Schedule: Dependant on location schedule
Location: Any location

Volunteer Qualifications

·         Interest in reading and books

·         Comfort and ease when working with children

·         An encouraging, warm approach

·         An understanding of appropriate and responsible behavior

·         Ability to read well

·         Reliable attendance is mandatory


Training & Support: A formal training session will take place in the weeks before the program begins; Staff will be on hand for the duration of the program to provide support and guidance.
