VLS - Visiting Library Service

Share Volunteer Impact:

Provide companionship and library materials to homebound or retirement residents patrons and make friendships of your own. VLS Volunteers take the library to those who can’t make it in.

Activities:
  • Choose materials according to client’s interests
  • Place materials on hold
  • Sign out materials
  • Keep record of what has been borrowed
  • Deliver materials and visit with client
  • Keep record of what has been enjoyed
  • Collect books and other items that are ready to be returned
Time Required: 2-3 hours/month
Commitment: 1 year minimum
 
Schedule: Determined by client & volunteer
Location: Any location
 

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Love to read and be familiar with a wide variety of authors
  • Be able to select titles on the basis of the clients’ interests and preference
  • Have available transportation since clients do not usually live within walking distance
  • Be able to carry a quantity of books
  • Enjoy working with the elderly who make up the majority of VLS clients
  • Feel comfortable using the library catalogue
  • Be able to cope with occasional problems that might arise
  • Work well with others
  • Must be able to pass a police check
Training & Support: Volunteers will be given a training package by the Volunteer Coordinator and will accompany a current VLS volunteer on a visit; Volunteer Coordinator is available for guidance and support.
