VLS4Kids - Visiting Library Service for Kids

Share Volunteer Impact:

Introduce the pleasure of reading to families who have not yet discovered the library.  Visiting Library Service for Kids volunteers visit high risk neighborhoods to read to children and ignite a love of books and an interest in the library.

Activities:
  • Sign out story kits and review materials for story selection
  • Visit scheduled neighborhood association or supporting organization venue
  • Create an enthusiastic, welcoming environment for all community members
  • Read stories, share rhymes and sing with children
  • Share information regarding services and programs available at the library
  • Encourage parents to join us at the library for end of session party.
Time Required: Two training sessions, eight ½ hour visits/session; one hour visit at local library to wind session up
Commitment: One year

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Enthusiastic and warm demeanor
  • Love to read aloud
  • Teaching or ECE background an asset
  • Drama or theatre experience an asset
  • Have available transportation since clients do not usually live within walking distance
  • Be able to carry a quantity of books
  • The ability to pass a police check is mandatory
Training & Support: Volunteers will attend two training sessions in advance of each session. Volunteer Coordinator and Children’s Services Staff are available for guidance and support.
