The Outpost KW, located at 15 Scott St. Kitchener, is an underground exhibition and performance space that bridges interactive multimedia art and electronic music from coast to coast. A space that fosters a thriving social art scene and embraces the experimental and the strange. The Outpost is a privately owned and operated space run by Goran Dmitrovic and Syd Ursa, with yearlong programming including featured artists, musicians, and collaborations of all kinds.
Q + A With Goran Dmitrovic of The Outpost KW
Q - How did the Outpost come to being?
A - The Outpost started off as a studio for our own creative projects, it quickly gained the attention of local artists, performers, and techies who wanted to be a part of a non-commercial movement.
Q - How many exhibitions/events do you host per year?
A - Once every month, to month and a half we put on a fusion event that incorporates live music, interactive art, and themed installations. We are currently working on expanding our programing by having weekly reoccurring events such as an open house and movie night. There are also a variety of shows put on by local promoters, which occur sporadically throughout the year.
Q - What is the attendance price for your events?
A - Tickets can range in price for $5-$20
Q - Who are your funders?
A - The Outpost is funded by Syd and Goran’s day jobs.
Q - Is there a membership base?
A - No.
Q - What are your hours of operation?
A - We have an Open House on Sundays from 1-5pm, and aside from that the gallery is open for private viewings or when there are events.
Q- Do you compensate artists for exhibiting/performing at the Outpost?
A - Yes.
Q- How can artists/musicians get involved?
A - Artists and musicians can get involved by reaching out to us on our Facebook page, emailing us at theoutpostgallery [at] gmail [dot] com, or dropping by the Open House and chatting with us.
Q - Are there many collaborations that happen between artists and musicians from meeting at the Outpost?
A - There have been quite a few collaborations sparked by artists meeting at The Outpost, both among musicians who go on to continue to put on shows together, as well as between musicians and visual/tech artists working on new projects. We also tend to bring together a number of artists to work on our monthly events.
