Penelope Stewart was born in Montreal, Quebec. In 1989 she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University, Toronto, Ontario and in 2007, she received a Master in Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo, New York, United States. In 2010, she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. A multidisciplinary artist, she uses a variety of media: photography, installations in situ, sculpture, drawing and print media and is known for her large sensory beeswax architecture. Her work has been supported by the grants from the Canadian Council for the Arts, the Ontario Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, and has exhibited solo and in group shows across Canada, Buffalo New York, France and Italy among others. Stewart’s work is held in the collections of the Library and Archives of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, the Securities Commission in Toronto, Ontario, the Bibliotheque National du Quebec in Montreal, Quebec, the National Gallery of Ecuadorin Quito, Ecuador and other public and private collections.
