She describes herself as always having an obsessive personality. Much of her work is drawn from that obsessiveness. She creates situations where she is obliged to do repetitive tasks in order to create her work in a systematic fashion. She works with certain methodologies, like collecting and re-inventing or re-creating. This task oriented work and collection go hand in hand- repetition leads to quantity, which in turn provides the material with which the work is realized.
In the past she has explored the relationship between her and her mother through various craft practices. She has been examining the parallel actions they take in their daily lives that are obsessive and escapist in nature. Her mother's obsession is her passion for reading Romance novels, while Shawna's is the repetition and labour intensive quality of using domestic craft as her medium in her studio practice.
