Yvonne Wakabayashi was born in Vancouver. She is the daughter of a dressmaker who was interned during the Second World War. Yvonne attended a workshop with Hiroyuki Shindo, Indigo Master and contemporary shibori artist in Japan in 1983. Many of her works have derived from the traditions of arashi shibori, where fabric is wrapped on long poles and becomes pleated. She also uses raw silk with the sericin left in to create sculptural forms. She has been a lecturer and instructor in textile arts, has won first prize at the Dressed to Thrill, Yeiser Art Center in Paducah, Kentucky, and the Best in Show and first prize in Wearable Art Awards at the Port Moody Art Center, B.C. Wakabayashi’s work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally.
