Idea Exchange | July 2, 2019
Idea Exchange is pleased to announce that we will resume interlibrary loan (ILLO) service as of Tuesday, July 2, 2019.
As you know, Southern Ontario Library Services (SOLS) suspended interlibrary loan services on April 18th due to a provincial funding reduction. Following the service suspension, SOLS, OLS-North and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport worked to restore the service across the province. On June 1st, the Southern Ontario Library Services (SOLS) reinstated the online system that libraries use to coordinate the program. This union catalogue searches the holdings of multiple libraries in one search and allows us to place and track requests for items from other libraries.
Unfortunately, the van delivery system for shipping interlibrary loans has ended. All libraries are now required to ship via Canada Post and a partial reimbursement of the shipping cost will be allocated to lending libraries from SOLS at the beginning of 2020.
Idea Exchange wants to support our members and their love of reading. These new changes meant we needed some time to work out new processes and find answers to many questions.
We have determined that due to the new additional shipping costs and increased staff time required for each interlibrary loan, the number of ILLO requests per person at one time is now limited to three. Members of a book club can continue to request multiple copies of the same title to fulfill their book club requirements. Only print, books on cd, and microfilm are eligible for requests via ILLO.
We will continue to evaluate the new service delivery model and its costs throughout the rest of the year. July to December 2019 will be a trial period, followed by a review of procedures, shipping costs and staff time. Thank you for your support and advocacy of this valuable service. Idea Exchange and the ILLO staff greatly appreciate it.
We would also like to invite you to visit other library systems in the area to borrow items that are unavailable from Idea Exchange. With our reciprocal borrowing agreement, you are eligible for a public library card with Hamilton, Waterloo, Kitchener, Guelph, Wellington County, Brant County (excluding Brantford) and the Region of Waterloo.
