I remember reading Slammerkin, Donoghue’s third book, before most Canadians knew who she was. I still recall the strength of the writing, somehow poetic but still to the point. Then ten years later, Room exploded onto the literary scene, becoming a bestselling book and an Oscar-winning movie. Then everyone knew who she was, but I still felt slightly smug about having read her back in the day!
Emma Donoghue is one of those rare chameleon writers. She’s equally adept at telling contemporary or historical tales; she writes in male and female voices; some of her novels are thrilling and some are more leisurely character studies. Initially from Ireland, she’s lived in Canada for the last twenty-odd years, so I believe we can absolutely claim her as a Canadian national treasure by now!
That’s why I’m so excited to have her coming to our Old Post Office branch on Friday November 22 at 6:30pm for “An Evening with Emma Donoghue”. She’ll read from Akin, her dazzling new novel of love, loss and family, (with a Q & A and book signing to follow). Be sure to book your tickets with us for this hot event!
