The word is out! Nominees for Canada’s largest recreational reading program have been announced and they’re great! Every year, the Forest of Reading committees selects several titles within each of their 10 categories as nominees and then we, the Canadian readers, get to read and vote on who should win!

More than anything, the Forest of Reading fosters a love of reading. What better way than to have the kids do the reading and then vote for their favourites! Each of the “trees” are awarded to an age and grade level making it easy to find engaging and meaningful content for all readers. You can check out the current nominees here and put the titles on hold through our catalogue.

Not sure where to start?  I encourage you to check out the book that’s won both my vote in the Blue Spruce category and overall my heart.  When we are kind, written by award-winning author Monique Gray Smith and illustrated by Nicole Neidhardt, is a beautiful invitation for children and adults alike to identify their own everyday behaviours as acts of kindness while also highlighting the positive feelings that kindness can cultivate within ourselves, others and our communities.  This selection is a simple yet powerful reminder that we can all show kindness and that we are all lovingly connected.

Elementary educators are also welcome to contact our school liaison, Laureen (lyacynuk [at] ideaexchange.org ), to book a Blue Spruce Read Aloud Virtual Visit for their classrooms appropriate for Junior Kindergarten through grades 2.
