Digital Conversion: Home Movies

VCR and old home movies

This software and equipment are available free for use at Idea Exchange, Old Post Office, Creative Studios.
Valid Idea Exchange membership required.

Use the VIDBOX Video Conversion to convert your home videos to digital movies. Capture video from your VHS tapes, digital camcorder, or 8mm video cassette tapes.

Conversion time is equivalent to the runtime of home movies. A USB Flash Drive or other storage device is required to save your video files. 

The following is a step-by-step guide that will show you how to convert your home movies to digital.

How to Guide

1. Connect the device

Retrieve the VIDBOX Video Capture Device and connect it to the computer using the USB cable provided.

Plug in the power cable for the VCR or Camcorder and turn the device on.

 

2. Starting Video Mode

Launch the VIDBOX Video Conversion for PC software.

Select Video Mode from the main menu screen.

Select your video connector type—RCA (Composite) or S-Video. If you need assistance with setting up the hardware, click the “How to Connect” button.

Click the arrow pointing to the right to proceed to the next step.

 

3. Record Settings

Adjust the Recording Time slider to match the length of the video you are converting.
Choose the location where the recording will be saved. This is the directory/folder on the computer’s hard drive or your external storage device where the recording will be saved.

4. Record

  • Enter the video file name.
  • Select the video aspect ratio. The aspect ratio should generally be 4:3. Select 16:9 (widescreen) if your video appears compressed.
  • Begin playback of your video tape on the VCR or camcorder to view it in the Preview Screen.
  • Set the Recording Volume using the slider at the bottom of the Preview Screen.
  • Set the video in the desired playback position (on the VCR or camcorder) and click the Record button to start recording. Click the [Stop] button to manually stop the recording any time.
  • Once finished, click the arrow pointing to the right to proceed to the next step.

Note: Conversion time is equivalent to the video runtime.

5. Review and Publish

Click the Play button to review the recorded video.
Click Open File Location to open the folder where the video recordings are saved.

In order to watch your video on your mobile device or computer, select Convert to MP4 to convert the files into MP4 format.

Choose a resolution setting, video quality, and location to save your MP4 file. Click Save to begin converting the file to MP4.

6. Burning onto DVD

From the Review and Publish page, select Burn DVD.

The DVD writer will be selected automatically. Enter a disc name for the DVD then click the Burn button to start. Click the Exit button to exit the program.

Note: Manually ejecting your disc before completion can cause the disc to malfunction.
