We are so excited to bring the new Ultimaker S5 to the Old Post Office. The S5 is an extraordinary printer with the latest technology, and we are thrilled to offer this resource to the community. With 3D printing technology evolving so fast, it's important to keep up with the changes in order to stay current in the industry.
This printer in particular offers dual extrusion, which allows users to print simultaneously with multiple materials, or with a dissolvable filament called PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol). PVA is a water-soluble polymer that dissolves when soaked in water. This means you don't have to worry about getting hard-to-reach support pieces out manually.
Our new printer also provides fantastic quality, down to less than 1mm layer height -- perfect for small miniatures! It is also fully vented which means we can print with some more functional material including nylon and semi-flexible TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane). There are some great resources out there to get started learning about our new printer. I recommend checking out Ultimaker’s excellent online manual and this Cura software tutorial.
If you'd like to try our new printer, you can submit a 3D print design to oporeception [at] ideaexchange.org and leave us a note saying you'd like to try the new printer. Or, come by and check it out in person; it is a beautiful machine and a sight to behold!
