For months Martin called this her "ugly quilt" and struggled with the clashing colours and the hard to handle rayon material. The traditional "snail's trail" pattern and the spiral symbolism often seemed out of control. Allowing this chaos to bubble up and then taming it into something with order and beauty gave her a sense of power during an otherwise difficult part of Martin's life.
