CAMBRIDGE THIRD AGE LEARNING

NASA Mars Project

With Dr. Martha Lenio, Lead Solar Consultant, Mars Green Consulting

Dr. Lenio will give a talk about her time in the HI-SEAS Mars simulation. We'll cover the science, and why NASA is interested in these analog Mars missions. In the second half of the talk, we'll explore what it was like living on "Mars", and what we've learned from from this experience. While primarily a psychology experiment for NASA, we'll also touch on communications, leadership and team work, physical health, and sustainability. There will be lots of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Dr. Martha Lenio, born and raised in Waterloo, Ontario, has had a life-long interest in both space exploration and environmental issues. Martha earned a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2004, and completed her doctorate in Photovoltaic Engineering from the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) in 2013. She has worked in the sustainable building industry, the photovoltaics industry, and academia. From 2014 to 2015 she commanded an 8 month Mars simulation with the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), funded by NASA. She has now started her own company, Mars Green Consulting, which focuses on renewable energy consulting and smart grid design. She is also currently the Specialist for Arctic Renewable Energy for WWF-Canada.

About Cambridge Third Age Learning (CTAL)

Cambridge Third Age Learning (CTAL) is a movement that encourages learning and discovery experiences for those in the “third age”—the stage in one’s life beyond full-time employment. By cultivating opportunities for discussion and engaging the expertise of local university professors and community professionals, CTAL supports those who have an intellectual curiosity and an interest in life-long learning. At Idea Exchange, our hope is to foster a self-organized group which would create CTAL programs throughout the year with our support as a venue and promotional vehicle.
