Explore the Waterloo region and get a behind-the-scenes look at buildings in our communities! This year, join the 16th annual Doors Open Waterloo Region on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10:00am to 5:00pm at various buildings across the region. This year’s event has a special focus on our "built region." Come and explore how the fabric of our built environment is woven from the threads of urban planning and design, engineering, infrastructure, architecture and transportation.
Included in the list of sites to explore is our new location: Idea Exchange, Old Post Office! Take a special guided tour to explore what’s old and what’s new at the former Galt Post Office. Learn more about the role of libraries in the 21st century and how it compares to the Carnegie libraries of the early 20th century from Erin Smith, Assistant Heritage Planner at the City of Brampton. Listen to Dan Schmalz, Corporate Records Analyst of the City of Cambridge Archives, as he shares historical trivia relating to the Old Post Office. Find out more about what’s in store for our Doors Open event here.
If you are interested in a self-guided tour, look no further than our shelves. Sign out a copy of An historic driving tour of Cambridge, and take yourself throughout the city, marveling at the beautiful stone buildings. Alternatively, set aside an afternoon for a walking tour of any of the three city centres: Galt, Preston and Hespeler.
Interested in taking a long walk to explore the hidden corners of Cambridge? Try taking the Cambridge Natural Heritage Tour! Sign out this little guidebook, and find the spillways, moraines and drumlins contained within the city. Don’t forget to sign out a Pedometer Kit at any of our locations and see just how many steps you’re taking. Kits include a Cycling and Walking Trails map for Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.
