Programs + Events | August 1, 2017
As you continue to enjoy the sun’s rays, outside adventures, and relaxation that summer provides, we have lots of interesting events taking place at Idea Exchange throughout the month of August. Read on for some highlights!
On Wednesday, August 23 from 2:00 – 3:00pm, visit the Preston library and immerse yourself in “The Documents Never Lie,” the fascinating story of the Brydons, a family who immigrated to Galt in the 1840s. James Brydon, Ph.D., and his daughter, Dianne Brydon, recently published their book, The Stalwart Brydons: From Scotland to Galt to Portage la Prairie, a Family History of 100 Years in Canada. Although public lore relates one version of the family’s story, James and Dianne have discovered, through extensive research, another version that is full of plot twists and intrigue – and they will argue that, despite what one might tell their children, more than one official record exists to prove what really happened in a family’s history.
On Friday, August 25, from 2:00 – 3:00pm, check out the NFB Film Club at the Queen’s Square branch. This month, the film will be Angry Inuk – in celebration of Canada 150. This 2016 release by Alethea Arnaquq-Baril profiles and defends the Inuit seal hunt, arguing that the hunt is vital to the survival of Inuit culture and way of life. Arnaquq-Baril follows Inuit activists who work to insert themselves into international and online discussions of the seal hunt, and fight for their right to preserve a historic tradition of the North.
Finally, on Saturday, August 26, from 10:00am – 4:00pm, visit the Cambridge Comic Arts Festival taking place at Queen’s Square. This exciting event is free for the whole family, with a variety of booths, activities, and displays available for everyone to enjoy. Dress up as your favourite comic book character and join the fun!
