Each year the One Book One Community committee chooses a title that everyone in the region should read. It must be written by a Canadian author, appeal to a broad audience, and – most importantly – have the “WOW!” factor. Of the sixteen previous selections, only one can be found in the mystery fiction section.
Seven years after Waterloo Region devoured Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny, we finally have another mystery to solve.
In Broken Promise, David Harwood, an unemployed newspaper reporter returns to his childhood home until he can find work. But something is rotten in the sleepy town of Promise Falls. Animals are being ritualistically slaughtered, suspicious men prowl the local college campus, and ominous messages appear at the abandoned theme park. And then David discovers that his troubled cousin Marla has mysteriously acquired a baby. She says the child was given to her by an angel … but the murder of the child’s mother suggests otherwise.

Once you’ve read this year’s book, check out other books by Linwood Barclay, discuss the book at one of our September book club meetings, and then meet the author when he visits Waterloo Region this September (more details to be announced soon).
