This month marks an important anniversary for fantasy fans. “A Game of Thrones,” the first volume in George R.R. Martin’s seminal fantasy series, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” was released twenty-five years ago, on August 1, 1996.

“A Game of Thrones” introduced us to the world of Westeros, where courtly intrigues are just as dangerous as the deadly monsters north of the kingdom. The series was originally pitched as a trilogy, but it has since grown to five books with at least two more in the works. It also provided the source material for HBO’s all-time most popular prestige series, “Game of Thrones.” Fans were divided by the ending of the TV series, so the arrival of the final books are highly anticipated by TV and book fans alike. Martin swears the next book is coming soon (although he’s been saying that for years, so don’t hold your breath). In the meantime, fans can always revisit the first five volumes again and again.
