Like most readers I have a busy schedule prepping for the Christmas holiday season and only a short time to enjoy my favourite literary genre.  Year-after-Year in December I have curled up by the lights of the Christmas tree with a short and cozy murder mystery.

James Patterson repackaged the short story into a series called Bookshots which includes The Christmas Mystery.  This story starts off in Bloomingdales and works it way through two different deaths.  Set-in modern-day New York and Paris there is plenty of indulgent shopping and a semi-legal Christmas tree acquisition.  For a completely different setting Edie Kiglatuk’s Christmas by M.J. McGrath takes place on Ellesmere Island, not far from Santa’s Workshop!  This artic mystery tangles up love, murder and the magic of reindeer.

If you desire a quintessential cozy Christmas setting with a Victorian feel there is plenty to turn too.  P.D. James’ short story  The Mistletoe Murder offers up this cozy setting in England, but holds nothing back when it comes to a brutal murder or a twist at the end.  Other big names in murder, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, can be found in Murder under the Christmas Tree.

If your Christmas prep has packed your schedule, you can listen to an audio book while tree trimming or baking cookies.  The Download Library has three stories from Anne Perry’s Christmas Story Series available in audio format, each has a run time of about 4 hours.  Perry’s characters may overlap into other works but each story is well written and can stand alone for you to enjoy.  I started with Book 5 A Christmas Beginning and this year I plan on baking my way through A Christmas Grace and possibly A Christmas Garland too!

No matter how busy your schedule, have a cozy holiday season!
