Everybody copes with uncertain times differently. Some people seek out cozy, familiar entertainment to de-stress —maybe a musical or a romantic comedy. That seems like a perfectly reasonable strategy. Me, I relax with horror movies.

I like them grim or kitschy, atmospheric or gory. If it’s spooky, I’m here for it. It inspires gratitude to know that, even on a tough day, I’m not being pursued by a chainsaw-wielding psychopath or menaced by children’s toy possessed by a vengeful demon.

If you’re in the mood to get spooky during lockdown, here are some of my favourite horror movies currently streaming on Kanopy:

Suspiria, 1977 — In this horror classic by Italian director Dario Argento, a young woman discovers an elite ballet academy holds terrifying secrets.

House on Haunted Hill, 1959 — One of the all-time greats, featuring a haunted house, five anxious strangers and an eccentric millionaire, played by the legendary Vincent Price.

A Girl Walks Home at Night, 2014 — A brilliant Iranian horror film that mashes together vampires, westerns and rock ‘n’ roll.
