Book cover of All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr

This Pulitzer Prize winning fiction is the story of a blind French girl and poor orphan German boy overcoming adversity and the hazards of war. The use of radio technology as a war tool and force of resistance and freedom is layered in amongst stories of human struggle. This title is available in all formats.

If you are part of a Book Club and want to start some great discussion, the title is available as a Book Club in a bag. The audio production available from the download library is also well done and a winner of both the Audie Award and the Earphone Award.

By Air, Enduring Courage: Ace Pilot Eddie Rickenbacker and the Dawn of the Age of Speed. Written by John F. Ross and Narrated by Edward Herrmann.

The author brings in an excellent balance of biography and history.  We learn of the life of Eddie Rickenbacker who faces adversity rising up from poverty in the early 1900s.  We also learn the history of the combustion engine, beginning with early cars and racing, to World War I and early airplanes.  The development of many technical aspects of the combustion engines is included in a way that is accessible for those readers who are not mechanics.

This audio book format has won the Earphone Award from Audiofile Magazine for excellence in production.  If you have not yet listened to an audio book, this is a good one to begin with.

By Sea, Make Your Bed: Little Things that can Change your Life and Maybe the World. Written by Retired Admiral William H. Mcraven.

Book cover of Make your bed William H. McRaven

This selection is not a war story.  It is a set of principles learned by Retired Admiral Mcraven during Navy Seal training which led to his success in both Navy operations and in life. The story is based on his 2014 Commencement Day Speech in Austin, Texas, and is clear cut with supporting observations from his military life.

Available as a book, e-book and audio book read by the author.

If you wish to enjoy any of these or other military titles through the digital Libby App we have a special tech help day for EREADING WITH LIBBY on November 19th (10:00 -11:30 am) at Queen Square.
