I cannot remember a time when I did not want books as gift, buy books whenever I found them or had them passed on to me from someone else. Reading has always been my favourite thing to do. Needless to say, my love of books has continued, and so has my collection of TBR (to be read) books. Now it has taken over and I have an incredible pile of books to read. In response I decided it was time to focus on reading these books and not getting any new ones.
In order to do this I needed some kind of a system. Little did I know, Google will show you so many articles and discussion boards that cover this topic. For example this one, How To Finally Get Through Your TBR List or this discussion board on reddit. During my search I read that someone attempted to create a system similar to the library to get her TBR pile finished. The concept was have two shelves, one a holdshelf and one as regular collection.
So I went home and pulled all the books off my shelf (….shelves). I placed all the ones I had read, and wanted to keep, on the bottom and then the top section I designated as my own holdshelf. On that shelf I selected a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Now when I am finished my book I can go and grab something from the holdshelf. So far it has been a good system. The earlier part of the year I found myself doing quite well and only reading the books I owned. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I got some new books as gifts and gift cards to buy books. I may have to enact a short term book ban to catch back up. This would have to include limiting holds on books here at the library, freezing my holds on my account and listing any books I want to read on the My Lists with my library account. Cross your fingers for me as I attempt once again to read down my TBR.
