With the newer Libby app becoming the most popular and functional option for e-reading, OverDrive has decided to wind down the use of the older OverDrive app on smartphones and tablets.

As of February 23, 2022, the OverDrive app will no longer be available for download from the Apple App, Google Play or the Microsoft Store. The developer will also be concluding support and updates for OverDrive to focus on providing features for Libby.

What does this mean for you as an Idea Exchange member?

If you are already using the Libby app, you won’t notice a change in your e-reading experience. However, if you are using the OverDrive app on a tablet or smartphone, you will probably want to consider switching over to Libby in the near future for your best e-reading experience.

The Libby app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play. If you need help finding your way forward with Libby, check out information on getting started with Libby here. Idea Exchange staff would also be pleased to assist you with this excellent app, which offers a convenient all-in-one way to enjoy e-books, e-audiobooks and more!

If you are using the built-in OverDrive search function on a Kobo e-reader, this will not be affected by the winding down of the app. You will still be able to use your Kobo’s OverDrive function to access e-books.

If you are using a computer for your e-reading, use the Libby web app via libbyapp.com or downloadlibrary.overdrive.com.
