Programs + Events | May 1, 2019
Our Spring programs continue this month, giving you lots of reasons to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. From Jane’s Walk and Earth Day to author talks and music, we’ve got something for everyone. Read on for some May highlights, and check out the monthly calendar for a full listing of events.
Join us for an informal meet and greet at the Old Post Office with local authors as we talk about their books, experiences, and what inspires them. Coffee Chats with Authors: Tara Mondou takes place on Wednesday, May 1 from 11:30am – 12:30pm. Tara is the author of Little Girl in the Mirror, the heart-wrenching true story of her mother’s childhood in the 1950s. This series continues with Coffee Chats with Authors: Tanya MacIntyre on Wednesday, May 8 from 11:30am – 12:30pm. Tanya’s book, Mindful Wisdom from my Philosopher Dad, is the first in a series of self-help books. Both author talks will include time for book signing.
Celebrate the global Jane’s Walk festival with us! Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. First up we have Jane’s Walk: The Handmaid’s Tale on Thursday, May 2 at 7:00pm at Queen’s Square. Our handmaidens will escort you to the locations used in the hit Hulu show The Handmaid’s Tale and share the forbidden history of our town before it became part of The Republic of Gilead. On Sunday, May 5 we have Jane’s Walk: Welcome to Cambridge Stroll at 2:00pm at the Old Post Office. Whether you are new to Cambridge, or wish to help us welcome those who are, this is the stroll for you. We will share stories, secret haunts, and the lovely vistas of our home town.
Saturday, May 4 is our 2nd Annual Earth Day Community Clean-Up! From 2:00 – 4:00pm at Preston, join us for an all-ages celebration that will include a neighbourhood clean-up, fun outdoor activities, and face painting. Later this month, head back to Preston on Saturday, May 25 for Planting Day. Help us plant in our community garden and enjoy outdoor activities from 10:30 – 11:30am. Don’t forget to check out the seed library when you stop by!
Our Ukulele Jam Night groups have been hard at work learning how to play the ukulele (or refining their skills) all winter long. Come hear the Queen’s Square group play some of their favourite songs at Ukulele in the Foyer on Tuesday, May 7 from 7:00 – 8:00pm at Queen’s Square. Listen to Hespeler’s group perform their favourites at Ukulele in the Foyer on Wednesday, May 15 from 7:00 – 8:00pm at Hespeler.
Virtual Reality Armchair Travel is back on Thursday, May 9! From 6:30 – 8:00pm, embark on an exciting trip that doesn’t involve jet lag or sore feet. Using our Google Expeditions VR headset, you’ll journey to the Antarctica and experience this cold continent like you’re really there.
We’re looking forward to seeing you in May at Idea Exchange!
