A hitman having second thoughts about his life choices is not new subject matter. Countless shows, from the Sopranos to Grosse Pointe Blank, feature assassins haunted by midlife crises. What sets this HBO series apart from the rest, besides the great storyline and dark humour, is the character of Barry. Lonely and disillusioned, Barry wants to leave his life of crime to pursue a kinder, gentler career in acting. Trouble is, he’s just too good as a hired gun. Bill Hader (from SNL and the underrated comedy, Hot Rod) won a much-deserved Emmy for his bang-up performance.
