Smith, Neil
The intriguing premise of this book caught my eye and when I started reading I was immediately pulled in by the charm of title character and narrator, Oliver “Boo” Dalrymple. At 13, when Boo dies he believes it’s because of a heart defect. When he ends up in a unique afterlife populated solely by 13-year-olds, he meets a fellow deceased classmate who tells him they were both killed at school by the same shooter. As the boys try to find out who killed them, the novel slowly evolves from a simple murder mystery to a beautifully moving look at tragedy, friendship and victimhood. A truly remarkable piece of work and one of the best books I’ve ever read. (Previously published in the Waterloo Region Record, January 23/16)
