McBride, Karen .
After her father’s passing, Hazel returns her family home in Spirit Bear Point First Nation in northern Quebec. As she mourns her dad and reconnects with family and friends, she experiences strange encounters with legendary trickster Nanabush, who wants her help investigating ancient magic that poses grave danger to everything and everyone she loves. This is a solid debut novel, adeptly mixing family drama, intrigue and mythological elements in ways that reminded me of Eden Robinson’s Son of a Trickster series. I particularly appreciated the keenly observed relationship between Hazel and her mother, which grounds the more mystical aspects of the story with humor and affection.
