In this dark and inviting novel, brother and sister Danny and Mauve live with their gruff and distant father, Cyril, in The Dutch House. They call it this because the previous inhabitants of the house were Dutch and the remnants of their interests and hobbies are in every nook and cranny, while lifelike paintings of them stare down from the walls. Cyril marries a young woman who has a curious attachment to the house and when their father dies suddenly, Mauve and Danny are quickly banished by their new stepmother. This story of greed and justice breathes new life into the story of Cinderella as we watch Mauve and Danny spin their tangled web in an attempt to reclaim their kingdom.
