The Girls by Emma Cline tells the story of Evie Boyd, a drifting teenager who comes under the spell of a Charles Manson-like cult. Where Cline succeeds is in dissecting the needs and desires of teenage girls: the power plays and the longing to fit in somewhere. Cline apparently was inspired to write the novel after reading her mother's diaries from the late Sixties. A stellar first novel effort.
