The Last Days of Dogtown is the story of a New England settlement established in the early 1800's. The inhabitants are an odd assortment of misfits struggling to survive the harsh climate and the hardships of life in a rural outpost. The characters are engaging and the story is beautifully written. Diamant is the author of the Red Tent another novel where she weaves a tapestry from many different lives. The Last Days of Dogtown has not achieved the acclaim of the Red Tent perhaps because of the smaller scope of the story or, as I suspect, because of the uninspired title.
