Creepy and evocative, this book will resonate with fans of the Gothic novel, since it features all the preferred tropes of the genre: a grim family history, a manor holding a thousand secrets, and a protagonist determined to solve the mystery, if only she can keep her sanity intact. What adds a little something new to this beloved recipe is the use of 1950s Mexico as the setting and a headstrong heroine who doesn’t conform to the damsel in distress stereotype seen in many older haunted-house tales.
