If I recited the highlights(infidelity, drugs, shooting a dog, etc) it would sound like Wonder Boys is a screwball comedy. But it's thanks to the writing of Michael Chabon, that makes this film more than the sum of its parts. There's plenty of drama (most of the characters are writer or attachments to the writing industry), but it never gets too overwrought. Michael Douglas as the perpetually stoned mid-career writer is excellent, as is Tobey Maguire, who provides a nuanced performance.
