Time travel is such a fascinating concept. Countless books have been written about characters who time travel either to the future or the past. There have been several recent young adult novels with time travel themes including The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig and Passenger by Alexandra Bracken. In The Girl From Everywhere, Nix and Slate use a rune-decorated ship to travel to different eras. In Passenger, the characters simply have the ability to travel from one time to the next.

Perhaps the most famous time travel machine in 20th century pop culture is Dr. Emmett (Doc) Brown’s Delorean in the 1985 blockbuster movie Back To The Future. The DeLorean DMC-12 sports car with its unique gullwing doors was designed by engineer John Z. DeLorean in the 1970’s. Approximately 9000 cars were made between 1981 and 1983 when production was halted due to bankruptcy. Six cars were used in the making of the movie Back To The Future, but only three of the original DeLoreans remain today.

In Back To The Future, Doc Brown’s DeLorean DMC-12 sent Marty McFly thirty years into the past where he meets the teenage versions of his parents and messes up time. According to Doc Brown, the DeLorean needed to generate 1.21 gigawatts of power in order to travel from one point in time to another. To resolve this problem, Doc integrated a nuclear reactor into the car! The nuclear reactor was placed at the rear of the car with vents leading out the back. The DeLorean was chosen for the film because it was felt that this car would most look like a spaceship to people living in the 1950s, the era Marty McFly visited in the first film. By the time the movie hit theatres in 1985, the DeLorean was no longer being made.

You will be able to check out a real DeLorean DMC-12 this summer at a free Teen Impact Movie night for youth at Forbes Park, 16 Kribs Street Cambridge. On July 12, 2016 IMPACT in partnership with Idea Exchange and the City of Cambridge will be showing Back To The Future on the big screen. Teens can get a picture with the DeLorean and check out this iconic car!
