Deadpool is the superhero your parents warned you about!

Back in "ye old days" (eh...1991 to be precise) Deadpool was first depicted in the X-Men spinoff comic book The New Mutants #98 as a supervillain, but the mutant became an antihero with a strong following due to his unique sense of humour. Rather than being a traditional goody-goody, he is a classic antihero with a smart mouth. Prepare to laugh until you drop at his perfect one-liners while kicking some bad guy butt.

When he still used his real name (Wade Winston Wilson), Deadpool was pulled into the top secret Weapon X program. The treatments he received essentially gave him the power of immortality since he can heal rapidly from almost any wound (even decapitation!) and is completely immune to diseases and most toxins. He was then trained to be an assassin and mercenary. This career path coupled with his quick wit led to his popular nickname--"merc with a mouth."

You can check out some of Deadpool's comic book exploits at the Idea Exchange with Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe by Cullen Bunn, which is the first comic book in the Deadpool "Killogy" that brings the character to a level with twisted horror. You can also check out Deadpool by Brian Michael Bendis that takes place in the Ultimate Spiderman Universe and pairs Spiderman with the X-Men.

Of course, if you desperately need more of the merc with a mouth, he is coming out with his own Marvel movie on February 12th! The film starring Ryan Reynolds looks amazing and would be the perfect Valentine's Day movie for those who would prefer an awesomesauce antihero with a skill for darkly humorous jokes instead of another boring romantic comedy.

I personally already have my tickets for the 10:00pm premiere on Thursday February 11th....your jealousy is noted  ;-)
