The Visiting Library Service is Back!

If COVID-19 has given us a silver lining, it is a deeper understanding of what it means to be homebound and isolated. While for most of us these long months of social distancing, staying home and keeping our social circles small have been lonely and stressful, for some it is sadly, a heightened extension of everyday existence. Enter the Visiting Library Service, otherwise known as VLS.

This program partners a volunteer with a client or clients who are homebound due to age or illness, or live in retirement residences. Through monthly phone calls or visits and library materials deliveries, these folks can connect, chat about the books and music they love, and receive reading materials to enjoy. It helps to ensure the social and intellectual health of some of the more vulnerable members of our community, and it offers volunteers a rewarding way to connect and support someone in need.

In order to continue to serve our community during COVID-19, the Visiting Library Service has been revised and updated to include vigorous health and safety precautions, additional training and a transition from in-person visits to phone chats and materials drop-off. We are ready to serve our community.

Interested in Volunteering?

Have some time to offer? In anticipation of an increased desire for this program, we are now welcoming applications for VLS Volunteers. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and insurance, the ability to offer two personal references and a vulnerable sector police check. All potential volunteers must attend an interview, general orientation and VLS training. Drop-off schedules are flexible and negotiated between volunteer and client, and this position requires 3 hours per month per client.
