Creative Pride
Let Pride Month celebrations inspire your creativity with these fun events:
Cambridge Art Galleries inspires you to explore the basics of block printing at Queer Craft Circle: Block Printing with Trevor Waurchen (Thursday, June 12). In this workshop, you'll learn to design, transfer, cut, and print your own block prints. By the time you're done, you'll leave with a printed image and the skills to continue printing at home.
Transform your wardrobe by modifying, fixing, and trading clothing with members of the queer community at Out of the Closet: Queer Clothing Upcycle and Exchange (Thursday, June 26). This queer-friendly program will use the Makerspace at the Old Post Office for upcycling and trading clothes.
Pride Reading and Cinema
Celebrate Pride Month with books that highlight the diverse voices and experiences within the rainbow of human love and identity.
Check out Pride & Prose: 2SLGBTQ+ Stories for Adults and Queer Lit for All titles for you to borrow. Families can enjoy Books for Families Under the Rainbow, a collection of picture books that celebrate the beautiful 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Whether you are looking for new LGBTQS+ Fiction, classic queer novels, exciting mysteries, or engaging fantasy and sci-fi, or can’t get enough romance, your library has reading lists just for you, including Pride Romance for Adult Readers and Pride & Pages: 2SLGBTQ+ Stories for Teens. Find stories that reflect you or acquire a new perspective by exploring the wide range of unique and vibrant voices in modern storytelling.
If you prefer a movie night, attend the screening of Someone Like Me at Preston (Monday, June 9). Offered as part of the NFB in Libraries program, the feature doc features a young gay man from Uganda, who leaves behind everything he knows to attain the universal freedoms everyone deserves: to be who he is and love whomever he chooses without fear of discrimination, persecution, or violence. For home viewing, browse the list of LGBTQ2S+ Movies available for borrowing or streaming.
Don’t forget to explore the displays at all library locations that showcase more Pride titles on your next visit.
History, Culture, and Community
Beyond a celebration, Pride Month is also a time of recognition for the history of Queer culture and the ongoing prejudices faced by members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. To learn more about the history of Pride and the lives of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, check out these non-fiction titles.
Cambridge Public Library is a safe space where all are welcome. We look forward to celebrating Pride with you!
