This exhibition marks the Riverside Print Group’s fifteenth anniversary. The exhibition theme, Under Construction, was a collective creation. Members’ individual responses range from macro to micro views addressing the ongoing construction—and, in some instances, deconstruction—of the environment, cities, communities, memory, relationships, personal identity, and the artist’s process and work.
From the Group’s beginnings in a community etching class, collaboration and exchange have been integral to their method. Sharing the exhibition title, the major collaborative print project premiering in this exhibition enabled members to continue working together while physically apart. The interactions that would typically take place in the studio were carried out on the space of the plates and the prints as each member responded to the marks made before theirs. The layering of varied approaches—image-oriented or abstract, improvisational or highly-planned, additive or subtractive—captures the creative energy and conversations of the printmakers’ studio.
As the Riverside Print Group celebrates a milestone year, Under Construction is a fitting theme that reflects the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and creativity that has characterized their history. It is also one of great promise that looks ahead to their continued collective exploration and enduring community contribution through the boundless medium of printmaking.
