Elizabeth Griffin
1986
Earlier Strata is based on a concept which evolved from a study of the demolition of older buildings in Elizabeth Griffin's neighbourhood. It deposits both the layered growth of a building and the abruptness with which those layers can be peeled away by the wreckers ball. The work is intended to convey qualities of time and transformation- one phase in an ongoing process. Elizabeth is intrigued with the hidden images which emerge and the odd juxtaposition of details such as the windows in the sky, staircases leading into space, the evocation of other memories. It is as if the building has revealed human content on view level by level through archaeological excavation. Sharon Boyd, 1994.
