1989-1990.

The quilting motif of Home is a design I created using the silhouettes of Alberta plants, the only exception being four cruise missile shapes interrupting the areas of simple diamond quilting. (At the time of the quilt’s making, the Cruise missile was being tested at in the north of Alberta.)

The work also consists of appliqué missile shapes, which are intended to be pinned to the wall in loose clusters on either side of the quilt.

The darkness, and the shadowy missile shapes point to the fragility of the idea of home. The fact that the missiles are both without and within the rectangle of the quilt is significant. On the other hand, the missiles being cloth and stripped of their volume could be seen as emasculating.

Depending on the context, this work can also be shown without the missiles.
