Richmond uses a layering technique with paper and fabric to suggest opulent and complex surfaces that have evolved and weathered over time. The use of richly textured and "precious" materials is designed to create an atmosphere of power and ritual reminiscent of shrines and reliquaries. The bamboo grid suggests the restraint of the confessional boxes and acts as a warning against breaking ancient rules, and a reminder of the decay which will overtake all things, however beautiful or powerful.
