Judy Major-Girardin: Shallows

Judy Major-Girardin, Untitled 2, relief, lithography, appliqué on fabric collage, 2021

Cambridge artist Judy Major-Girardin's fiber-based artwork takes center stage in her solo exhibition, Shallows, debuting at our Queen's Square Gallery.

"Judy Major-Girardin, a local artist from Cambridge, has not only contributed significantly to the local arts community but also to arts education, making her a praiseworthy focus of energetic community celebration," said Alix Voz, curator of the exhibition. "Shallows invites viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty and significance of vital natural ecosystems. Through mixed-media textile artworks and an ambient soundscape, the exhibition highlights the delicate balance of life within wetlands, urging us to preserve and celebrate these invaluable environments."

Within the works of Shallows, translucent flowing layers of fabric and play of light suggest a fluid ambiguous space that acts as a visual metaphor for wetlands. Judy Major-Girardin’s artwork raise awareness for the preservation and impact of wetland environments by referencing plants and amphibians from local marshes either directly or in abstract ways. A large-scale work within the exhibition, entitled Reflections, includes a frog chorus sound component recorded in a Bruce Peninsula wetland providing a more immersive, sensory experience.

The community is invited to a special opening event on Saturday, May 11. Shallows will be on display in the Queen’s Square Gallery from May 11 to August 10.
