Artists Laura Peturson and Andrew Ackerman reflect on their shared experience as parents, their feelings on the insularity of family, and the nature of time in their upcoming Cambridge Art Galleries’ exhibition Keeping Time at the Queen’s Square Gallery.

“With narrative imagery that references archetypes from children’s literature, the “murals” in this exhibition create an immersive environment,” expressed Alix Voz, exhibition curator. “The imagery blends measurable markers of time, such as erratic boulders, flora, and decomposition, with personal associations of memory and imagination.”

Keeping Time combines painted imagery with woodcut and linocut prints. paper-cuts and hand-cut birch panels composed in the shallow relief of a stage set. Large-scale carved prints are wheat-pasted directly onto the gallery walls, encouraging visitors to explore and discover familiar animals and landscapes, sparking memories of childhood explorations. Wood structures installed by Andrew further invite exploration, allowing visitors to find their own space within the gallery.

The artists welcome the community to a rare behind-the-scenes look at their process as they install the exhibition before its opening. On Wednesday, March 12 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm the gallery doors will be open, inviting visitors to step inside and catch a sneak peek at the installation in progress.

The community is invited to a special opening event (Saturday, March 15) to tour the gallery and meet the artists. Keeping Time will be on display in the Queen’s Square Gallery from March 15, 2025 to May 31, 2025.
