Meet Our Library Settlement Partnership Worker

Tuba Sengul, Library Settlement Worker in the library.

Each October we take a moment to thank and celebrate our Library Settlement Partnership (LSP) workers during LSP Week and this year we celebrate the amazing work of Tuba Sengul.

Tuba's Story

Tuba arrived in Canada with her young family three years ago, and has successfully settled here, so she knows what it takes to feel at home here. What Tuba enjoys most about her Canadian life is the cultural diversity and sense of community, which makes her doubly qualified for her role as a settlement worker, as she values both the clients, and the opportunities life in Canada can bring.

As an LSP worker, Tuba connects immigrants to the resources and programs available at places like the YMCA, Cambridge Public Library, and other organizations and services, but she does so much more than that. By listening to concerns and challenges with an empathetic ear Tuba helps folks when they feel overwhelmed and uncertain. Offering reassurance and sharing examples of others who have faced the same challenges, leaving her clients with a sense of hope and belonging during a time of immense transition. She continues to follow up as they move through the stages of settlement helping them feel more settled and integrate into our community.

Aside from the basics of work and housing, Tuba is aware that building social connections is vital to happiness and well-being. To support these goals, she hosts LSP information sessions and sets up library tours. The information sessions cover a range of useful topics, such as education, employment, and skilled trades. They provide valuable information and offer a chance to meet people in similar situations, helping newcomers build a support network and gain the knowledge they need to thrive in their new environment.

Each day, when Tuba arrives at her desk, she knows that she will be assisting amazing people, as they face the challenges of shaping a life in an unfamiliar place. With energy, commitment,  and passion, Tuba helps them craft a new life chapter – one that includes the hope and possibility that Canada offers. We here at the Cambridge Public Library are happy she’s part of our team.

If you or someone you know are seeking settlement help, you can make an appointment by contacting Tuba via email or phone at 226-988-2830. You can also find her at our Community Desk on select days.
