Meet Our Staff: IT Services

Michael and Ashish with computer equipment and supplies behind them.

Michael and Ashish are two friendly faces in our IT Department.

Michael has been with us since 2014, but before that, he started as an intern with the department.

Ashish has been a part of Idea Exchange for two years. He has worked as system administration, network administration, and providing technical support to staff. They both play a vital part in the technology services we provide, including access to Wi-Fi, computers, and other systems.

What current project of yours are you most excited about?

Michael: We have done a lot of big projects this year – but the current one I’m most excited about is the computer replacement. Staff and the public will appreciate the updated systems as they get rolled out.

The live-streaming project has also been an interesting pilot project, and the results are rewarding as we adapt our online offerings for some in-person events.

Ashish: We've recently rolled out an impressive new Wi-Fi system and I had the chance to work on its network configuration.

Currently, our team is preparing to introduce PaperCut for automated printer deployment to end users. I've also been involved in configuring user-friendly touchscreen OPACs. It's a collective effort that keeps our tech environment thriving.

What are your hidden talents or hobbies?

Michael: I’m your typical nerd in some regards. I have an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars and The Wheel of Time. I own something like 80 Star Wars Legends (formerly known as the Expanded Universe) novels from back in the pre-Disney days. I also side hustle as my wife’s sound guy when she needs, helping with things like live recordings and sound checks.

Ashish: Beyond tech, I find joy in photography. Capturing landscapes and wildlife is my escape from the tech world. I'm also a fan of long road trips and would love to explore more of Canada.

What is your favourite book to re-read or movie to re-watch?

Michael: This is a tough one. My favourite movie to rewatch is Return of the Jedi, an epic adventure with a satisfying conclusion, and the effects and production quality still holds up well today, looking great on the recent 4K HDR remasters. My favourite book to re-read is Columbus Day by Craig Alanson. It’s a hilarious adventure involving a talking rude beverage can who’s really an ancient AI. Spaceships, power armour, and a lot more.

Ashish: I'm a huge fan of superhero movies, and the Spider-Man series starring Tobey Maguire is my all-time favourite. Occasionally, I also like to re-watch movies like The Shawshank Redemption and True Lies.
