The Treasure Hunters Club, by Tom Ryan. Toronto, ON: Simon & Schuster, 2024. 370 pages
Tom Ryan’s The Treasure Hunters Club is a riveting ride set in a quaint seaside Nova Scotia town that will keep you guessing until the final pages. It’s The Goonies meets Nancy Drew meets Knives Out, complete with buried treasure, hidden messages, family secrets, suspicious deaths, and an old mansion on a hill.
Maple Bay has its share of eccentric locals, and each one will spin you a tale of the town’s legend. It is said that many years ago, a pirate ship sent two mates ashore to bury a treasure chest, which has never been found.
And now, two newcomers are set to arrive. Peter is heading to Maple Bay to meet his grandmother (the mansion dweller). While Cass, unknown to Peter, is heading to the same town, to housesit for a family friend. Neither Peter, nor Cass knows about the treasure, but it won’t be long before they are swept up in the excitement.
Of course, no story of sculduggery would be complete without a teenaged sleuth. Fifteen-year-old Dandy has been scouring these beaches her whole life and will be the first to tell you that treasure is the most fun when you are still searching for it.
