Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27, with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in fun literacy-based activities as a family.
Reading or doing a learning activity each day improves a child’s literacy skills dramatically. Sharing this activity with young people can also help the adult reading with them to brush up their own skills and engagement. It's a wonderful way to bond as a family, form precious memories, and communicate the value of literacy and lifelong learning as children grow.
Family Literacy Together
There are so many ways to practice family literacy together. The library has programs that the whole family can enjoy, activitybooks filled with games, fun activities, and more. Family Literacy Day is not limited to simply reading together. It's also about spending time playing, singing, writing, and talking together. These activities all assist in helping children acquire communication skills, as well as building self esteem, creativity and interpersonal connections.
Each of our locations is hosting a special Family Literacy Day program on Saturday, January 25. Visit your library for some fun literacy-based activities and continue the fun at home by borrowing books and other activities from our collections.
Learn to be Green, Together
The theme for this year's Family Literacy Day is Learn to be Green, Together.
In celebration of this, we're also excited to welcome local author Sarah Uren to Queen’s Square. During her visit, Sarah will share a plasticine project from her book Windy Acres Workshop: Art, Nature & Literature Edition. Families who participate will be invited to create a scene with modeling clay on a slice of wood as a creative group activity celebrating the natural world.
