Cherish Your Family Memories

Many of us have precious family memories captured in photos, VHS and camcorder tapes, slides, or cassette tapes — treasured artifacts that connect us to our past. Preserving and sharing these moments in today’s digital world can be challenging. Your library is here to help with programs, services, and collections, providing the tools and guidance to digitize, protect, and celebrate your family history.

Preserving Your Memories

The Old Post Office is a great place to begin these projects. The Creative Studios has photo and slide scanners, VHS and camcorder tape digitizers, and more. Register for an introductory program and learn to start using available digital conversion equipment with basic steps. Knowledgeable staff can make recording room and equipment reservations for you as you work to complete your projects.

Documenting for Future Generations

If you wish to capture your family history in a new way, you may want to interview family members. Learn techniques to start these conversations during a special presentation by local writer Kevin Swayze. Pair this knowledge with the use of audio recording technology at the library, to preserve voices and stories for future generations.

The Old Post Office is also hosting a screening of the NFB Film, Unarchived. The film explores professional archiving, how stories have traditionally been documented and how some community archives are working to preserve a more inclusive history for the future.

Living Legacy

You can also bring your family’s legacy to life with a creative memory project. From canvas photo prints and scrapbooks to wooden-graved recipes, you can customize your family’s stories using the maker equipment at the library; Cricut maker, laser cutter, and large format printers. Attend a maker program to learn more or visit the Services and Technology section of our website for ways to get started. For more inspiration, check the Virtual Library for Creativebug, your online crafting home.

Your library is here to help you preserve, celebrate, and share the life stories of your loved ones for generations to come.
